Get a handle on doorknobs – did you know?
It wasn't until the mid-19th century that doorknobs were manufactured in the United States, though they had been used for centuries. In colonial times a simple latch and wooden knob were common. During the Revolution round knobs first appeared, the majority of which were English imports. More than 100 U.S. patents were granted for knobs in the 1800s.
Pressed glass, cut glass, ceramic, bronze and more have all had their turn, but brass remains the most popular material because it resists rust. Steel locks were introduced near the beginning of the 20th century. Will programmable hardware close the door on mechanical spring locks? Stay tuned.
